Mr. David Cohn was a very charismatic speaker; he used his communication skills to woe his audience, and show how important the interaction between people is in the industry. He explained to us the importance of community partnerships, and how these can make a difference when you’re starting your own business. Not only did he just tell us, but he showed us all the partnerships he is involved in such as – Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Promises 2 Kids, The Old Globe, San Diego Natural History Museum, Make a Wish between others. He taught us that in order to please our customers and make ourselves more presentable, our answer to every single request should be ABSOLUTELY. However, this doesn’t mean that one person can support an entire business; which is why the staff is also key to the success of a restaurant. Adding excitement and changing it up once in a while will add to the excitement of the working environment and keep them motivated. This is important because the staff’s unhappiness will project to the customers, which will then affect the business if the customers are not satisfied with the service. Even though it’s not an easy industry, Mr. Cohn presented us reasons why the restaurant industry is one that we should highly consider – it’s the second largest private sector employer in the state of California, restaurants are the number two producers of sales tax revenue in the state, they build careers and allow you to use your own creativity, and you get to dine out and enjoy while other customers are not there.

Mr. Cohn and the coordinators that came with him taught me a really good lesson in class that day. I learned that the dining industry is about making people feeling comfortable and creating reasons why they would want to go out on holidays. However, being involved in this industry means that you are going to have to be willing to give and take since most of the time you will have to be present to make the customer happy. Before the presentation, I already knew how important customer service was in a successful business, but this presentation taught me ways to succeed in pleasing the customer. I used to work as a receptionist in a international presentation event, where my job was to answer any doubts the clients had and present the uniqueness of the country of Taiwan. However, the dining industry is not just about knowing the facts about a certain country but the people that are involved in it as well. Andrea, the event coordinator of Balboa Park, taught us how vital people interaction is and how relating to them will help them feel more comfortable. The presentation also taught me that there’s always going to be job because the industry is constantly changing and developing, and in the restaurant industry you get the chance of picking up everything and finding a new job somewhere else when you need a change. Taking advantage of the wisdom and the help presented is also key in the business, since it’s helping others feel good and you are also helping yourself as well. Mr. David Cohn also taught us that relying on others doesn’t mean that we’re failing, but that we have the ability to trust others and acquire support from them. One quote from the presentation I will remember when I’m looking for a job in the Hotel Industry is “if you don’t want to fail, you’re not going to fail.” Mr. David Cohn served as a great inspiration, and really got me thinking about the restaurant industry and the unlimited opportunities out there that might be waiting to be discovered.
